Alder Castle is approached by a private drive along the lochside, the castle is located only 5-kms down the 25km long loch! Despite looking older, the castle was built recently to a very high specification, combining the extravagance of the Victorian era (19th century) with the comforts of the modern world.

Equipment Provided:

Towels and bed linen are provided (this may be duvets or blankets and sheets). Each property is furnished and equipped to cater for the stated permitted occupancy and also includes pots and pans, crockery, cutlery, iron and ironing board.

In certain areas TV channel choice and reception may be poor. Freesat are available in some properties. Please check beforehand if this is important.

Catering:

All our lodges can be let fully or part catered and with additional housekeeping if required. Please specify with your Sandgrouse Travel planner.

Hiking:

You are welcome to walk in any direction from the lodge. For advice on long distance and short walks please ask your Sandgrouse Travel planner. Other good areas for walking are Loch an Eilein at Aviemore, Newtonmore wildcat trails, Killiekrankie.

Fishing:

Guests staying in our lodges are welcome to fish on the loch by the property, as well as Loch Rannoch from the bank or you are welcome to bring your own boat to launch. Please ask for rules before booking. Both lochs have a good wild stock of Brown trout. Good trout fishing in both lochs and further hill lochs are available but please ask about access.

Eating Out:

There are a numerous local places to eat out (although they are a good drive from the lodge!) to suit a variety of different appetites. In addition you will find a wide range of hotels in Aviemore, Grantown and Pitlochry.

Stalking - Upland Land Management Program as directed by the Scottish Government (Scottish National Heritage)

Stalking red or roe deer is a fascinating way to discover Scotland’s landscape and culture. You will spend time walking through beautiful landscapes – mountains, glens and forests – as you go in search of the deer.

Please also discuss stalking the deer with your binoculars or camera.

The red deer on the estate are carefully managed on a sustainable basis producing healthy quality food in balance with the local environment. Deer welfare, conservation and environmental enhancement are important initiatives for the estate. Should you wish to arrange stalking, you will spend time with one of the estate stalkers on the hill. The tradition of deer stalking will offer you an insight into Scottish culture which many other visitors will never experience. Deer stalking is the term we use in Scotland for hunting and shooting deer. It is an important part of modern-day land management. It also contributes to the local economy; helps protect many native plants and species and maintain a healthy and strong population of red deer. Deer stalking is also a traditional activity in Scotland, a link to the traditional culture of the Highlands.
