For anyone dreaming of experiencing a multi-day dog sledding expedition into the true arctic wilderness but who does not wish to sleep over night in a tent, our 'Ship In The Ice Luxury Adventure' is for you.

EXPEREINCE THE WORLD FAMOUS 'SHIP IN THE ICE' IN TEMPELFJORDEN

The expedition commences at Svalbards main settlement, Longyearbyen where you continue north towards Tempelfjorden and the totally unique Ship In The Ice. Having spent the first night on expedition on board the 100 year old, fully modernised schooner, you continue deeper into the frozen landscape of Spitsbergen, heading to the remote luxury lodge of Nordenskiold.

You will enjoy two nights at this stunning of luxury lodges in the middle of one of the most pristine enviroments on earth. From the lodge you will be taking dog sledding trips over the sharp mountains, glorious glaciers and across frozen fjords.

Day 1: Arrival in Longyearbyen, Svalbard

Day 2

Day 2: Depart on your adventure to Ship In the Ice

This morning your guide will meet you in the reception at your hotel at 10 am. There you will have a briefing before packing your personal items and heading towards the dog yard in Bolterdalen.

This morning your guide will meet you in the reception at your hotel at 10 am. There you will have a briefing before packing your personal items and heading towards the dog yard in Bolterdalen.

Once at the dog yard will meet all the 80 happy Alaskan Huskies that live there, they will all be eager to get on the trip and out into the wilderness. The guide will show you how to harness dogs and how to mush your own team. Everyone will take care of their own team with guidance from the guide. You will harness, feed and look after your own dogs throughout the trip and develop a bond with your team. After the training it is time to head out to the wilderness. On leaving the dog yard you will drive through the vast valleys all the way to Tempelfjorden where 'Ship In The Ice' based.

Day 3: Travelling on from Ship In The Ice

After breakfast, you will harness you team and start the second expedition day. While standing on the frozen fjord the dogs are eager to lead you even further into the arctic tundra. Before the evening falls you will draw closer to the magnificent Nordenskiöld glacier located right next to the Nordenskiöld Lodge. Here at the glacier...

After breakfast, you will harness you team and start the second expedition day. While standing on the frozen fjord the dogs are eager to lead you even further into the arctic tundra. Before the evening falls you will draw closer to the magnificent Nordenskiöld glacier located right next to the Nordenskiöld Lodge. Here at the glacier moraine you will fasten your team safely for the night. After feeding the dogs, you can prepare your well-earned dinner. Now you can relax, enjoy the wonderful dinner and the magnificent view over to the glacier.

Day 4: Day around Nordenskiold glacier

In the morning when the dogs start to get restless, it is the cue to head out to the wilderness.

If the ice in the fjord is strong enough you will make a daytrip to Pyramiden, the abandoned Russian mining town which is a fascinating visit. Once in the ghost town you will take a tour with your expert guide around the old buildings and enjoy an expedition lunch before returning back to the lodge. After a long day outside you can warm up in the sauna and enjoy good hearty dinner.

Day 5: Heading back to Longyearbyen

This morning you will make a tasty expedition breakfast both for the dogs and yourself, then it's all systems go and time to say goodbye to your faithful dog teams and the Nordenskiöld Lodge. 

You will be taking a boat transfer back to Longyearbyen and to the civilization for a final night on Spitsbergen....

This morning you will make a tasty expedition breakfast both for the dogs and yourself, then it's all systems go and time to say goodbye to your faithful dog teams and the Nordenskiöld Lodge. 

You will be taking a boat transfer back to Longyearbyen and to the civilization for a final night on Spitsbergen. From here you can collect your luggage and relax in the hotel or enjoy a final wonder around the town for any last minute souvenir shopping. You will then be taken to the airport for your return flights home.

Recommended clothing in the Arctic: Woolen underwear as the base layer, warm wool or fleece trousers & sweater on the top, two layers of socks (thin & thick woolen socks), windproof layer on the top (spacious clothing is recommended since air is the best insulation),  gloves &  (wool is recommended), warm hat (wind proof), scarf or fleece- tube.

Good to have with you: Indoor shoes or extra woolen socks, Indoor leisure wear/ casual clothing for dinner, toilet articles, sunglasses, sunscreen (not based on water), binoculars, camera, contact lenses (for those using glasses), small bag/ backpack for personal equipment during the  trip. The rest of your belongings you can leave to Basecamp Hotel whilst out on expedition. 

 

Included:

Activities, accommodation and meals according to the program.
Transport to and from accommodation.

Warm clothing: Snowmobile suit, boots, gloves, hat, goggles and balaclava.
Search- and rescue insurance.

During the trip, all guests will have an active role harnessing and feeding the dogs. For this trip, you need to be in good physical condition. In some parts of the trail there are steep hills where you need to help your dog team. You do not need to have previous knowledge of dog sledding. 

N.B. This trip is not suitable for persons suffering from back pains. If you are pregnant, please talk to your doctor before booking the trip.
