Scottish Journey of Discovery with Unique Highland Experiences View Full Screen Itinerary

Your clients will be enjoying the country's top accommodation, both a mixture of world-famous hotels along with private estates (the private, secluded homes of billionaires). Beyond the ultra-exclusive accommodation options which rival the world's very best, we have been able to arrange fascinating interactions with the industry's most respected guides, local experts and professionals encompassing a wide variety of Scotland's most well-loved facets. This trip truly ticks all the boxes and take clients to areas of Scotland that are secretive and away from the masses of typical summer tourists.

Here at Sandgrouse Travel, we work tirelessly to exceed the expectations of even the most seasoned travellers and we are certain that this itinerary will blow your clients away as it meanders its way from the historic capital city of Edinburgh, to the jaw-dropping fjord-like terrain of the West Coast. The third and final portion of the trip takes your clients on a magical journey inland, heading east to the mighty Cairngorm Mountains, Speyside (one of the world's most famous whisky making regions) and of course, Royal Deeside (by Balmoral Castle, the British Royal family's holiday home).

Throughout the trip, your clients will have the same dedicated driver/guide using a new Range Rover Vogue. This will provide an extremely comfortable platform from which to journey across Scotland complete with luggage. The driver/guide will essentially be a local fixer, with the clients at all stages of the trip able to help and sort anything at any time should they wish. Equally, the driver/guide can melt into the background, gauging the situation through years of experience with high valued clients. Behind the scenes, we have other members of staff who are always on call, should anything additional be requested by your clients. If additions are required during the clients time here in Scotland - for example, if they wish to arrange something at the drop of a hat, or order something to be delivered to them this is no problem at all - no ask is too great for our team.

12th July 2020
Breakfast can be taken this morning either down in the hotel brasserie - including an all you can eat sumptuous buffet with a variety of foods from traditional Scottish Cooked to Continental Breakfast, or to order in the Caledonian Suite to the clients taste.

After breakfast, your clients will then embark on a full-day tour of Edinburgh including some truly unique, off-market experiences.

The first port of call today for the clients will to head down to Leith once again, here they will be meeting one of Scotland's leading traditional textile designers who still works with hand drawn looms. Araminta Campbell has designed tweeds and tartans for some of the world's most wealthy individuals, as well as commercial commissions from hotels, companies and working sporting estates. Araminta has been commissioned to design the interior soft furnishings, tweed and tartan for the fast becoming world-famous Fife Arms Hotel in Braemar, owned by the world's largest private art dealers, the Wirths. The Fife Arms features later in the clients itinerary so we know that meeting Araminta this morning will add greater depth to this experiential stay later on in their trip. Beyond the above, the clients will in fact have the opportunity to embark on their own journey of designing either a family tweed or tartan, we have costed this wonderful gift into their trip. This initial meeting will serve as a great starting point between Araminta and the clients, before ideas can be exchanged over many weeks of emails as designs are carefully narrowed down. Araminta takes inspiration from various aspects of the clients preferences, and interests, creating highly personalised fabrics which are essentially, one of the ultimate heirlooms for future generations of the family. Tartans will be registered with the Scottish Tartan Authority. Having your own unique tweed or tartan offers clients the chance to have their own branding, fabrics, soft-furnishings, clothing, scarves, kilts, suits, skirts and much more. Many of the M.E. Royal families we have worked with are overjoyed at the work Araminta has completed for them and we believe this gift of tartan or tweed to be one of the ultimate Scottish souvenirs for our billionaire clients.

Following on from the clients 2-hours with Araminta, the clients driver will take them back into the Georgian built 'New Town' close to The Caledonian Hotel. Here the clients will embark on an off-market tour of the city's most revered clockmakers and silversmiths - recently also visited by Her Majesty The Queen. Hamilton & Inches jewellers are someone of a one-of-a-kind in this day and age. On arrival the clients will enjoy a welcome glass of Champagne in the closed off shop, before embarking on a workshop tour meeting the amazing, small team of craftsmen and women. This peculiar jeweller, who has held a Royal warrant for over 50-years, has no machinery in the workshop - everything is crafted by hand and the intimate tour of the workshop is truly illuminating and interesting. Hear how the shop's craftsmen worked on designs for Harry Potter films as well as the Scottish gold collection - an exclusive line of Scottish gold jewellery, from gold mined in the Highlands themselves!

Following on from the incredible tour of one of Edinburgh's most respected luxury firms, the clients will be checking-in to Ondine Restaurant in the city's remarkable 'Old Town'. Here a table has been reserved for the clients and they will enjoy one of Scotland's top seafood restaurants, with King Scallops, Lobster, Crab and Langoustines straight from the rich waters of the West Coast - all fit for king!

After lunch, clients will be taken to Edinburgh Castle where they will embark on a shared tour using Audio Headsets (tickets pre-paid for and provided so as to avoid lengthy queues) - a self guided tour of the castle takes around 1h 30-minutes and will provide the clients with a greater understanding of the city's most incredible and iconic building - the very building they will be enjoying looking at from their suite at The Caledonian Hotel Waldorf Astoria.
This afternoon, the clients will have free to themselves to explore the city on foot. The 'Old Town' offers an incredibly enjoyable, vibrant buzz. Here there is an energy that is hard to describe as clients wander enchanting alleyways and narrow 17th century 'wynds'. If the clients wish, this time can be used to explore some of the city's boutique shops. On standby in the city, we have an antique and fashion shop expert, who will be able to take the clients to a variety of the city's hidden gems if they so wish (this addition is at no additional charge). Clients may of course, wish to return to their suite for a rest before their early evening activity commences.

This evening, around 7:30pm we have a private Underground City Tour, exploring the city's hidden streets and vaults, hearing about the darker side to the 17th Century Edinburgh. Edinburgh back then was a very different city, with illegal trades being forced underground, and with new development buring the old town. Today there remains a labyrinth of incredibly well preserved chambers, vaults and rooms hidden several storeys below the street level. Clients will enjoy a German speaking tour with a guide on a private basis, at first above ground, before venturing below street level to hear of the darker tales of old. The tour commences with a dram of whisky in a candle lit room before resurfacing at 9pm and thrust back into the 'real world'!

At 9pm, we have reserved at table for the clients at The Witchery By the Castle, a charming restaurant just a stone's throw from the Castle Esplanade and Portcullis. Here the clients will enjoy a candle lit meal in a 'Harry Potter' style restaurant. This high class restaurant has a unique atmosphere with its dark wooden panelling and cosy atmosphere in the heart of historic Edinburgh. After dinner, the driver will take the clients back to The Caledonian Hotel.

Accommodation: The Caledonian Suite, The Caledonian Hotel - Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh on a Bed & Breakfast basis. At approx. 120 sq.m/1,291 sq. ft., separate living room, high ceilings, tea /coffee facilities. With grand views of the city's iconic Edinburgh Castle, this suite offers interconnected en-suite bedrooms and a lounge area with eclectic artworks, sofa, wall mounted flat screen TV and dining table. Transfer Time: Max 15 to 20-min travel time from point to point. Localised city centre mileage only.

13th July 2020
Breakfast can be taken this morning either down in the hotel brasserie - including an all you can eat sumptuous buffet with a variety of foods from traditional Scottish Cooked to Continental Breakfast, or to order in the Caledonian Suite to the clients taste.
After breakfast client will be collected at the front doors of the hotel by their driver guide who will be driving them today to the West Coast of Scotland via some wonderful sites of interest, as well as some of the country's most iconic and grand landscapes.

Heading north out from the city, the clients will first past Linlithgow Palace, where Mary Queen of Scots once lived - today a substantial ruin, the castle holds a very special place in Scottish folklore and phycology due to its connection Mary Queen of Scots. Driving on from here clients will head past the famous 'Kelpies' - these two giant sculptures of Scottish water-horses are by the side of the road and make for an interesting visit should the client's wish, alternatively the driver will push on to the small town of Stirling. Here the clients have the option of visiting 12th century Stirling Castle should they wish - this castle is the second largest in Scotland and is steeped in history from both modern to recent times. Across the valley lies the iconic Wallace Monument an imposing Victorian monument to the legendary Scottish folklore hero Sir William Wallace (of Mel Gibson's Braveheart fame!). A visit to the monument affords climbing the steep staircase inside to the top with amazing view as well as of course, the museum.

Travelling away from the 'lowlands', the driver will now follow the road west to Callender and the village of Doune. Doune Castle is where "Monty Python The Holy Grail" was filmed, and a number of our guests love to be able to see this! Especially our European clients. More recently, both Outlander and Game of Thrones have been filmed at Doune Castle. If this is not of importance we may stop at The Scottish Antiques and Arts Centre which offer clients the chance to pick up something very special - a unique souvenir from Scotland they are unlikely to ever see again. The Scottish Antiques and Arts centre is a treasure trove of undercover stalls and shops selling a myriad of Scottish items from bygone years.

Heading west further still from Callender and Doune, the driver will start to enter real Highland terrain. Here the landscape changes dramatically, mountains surge up from all sides and the clients will really start to enter, quintessential Scotland. Driving towards Rannoch Moor, one of the most isolated areas in the United Kingdom, the road reaches over 1,500ft as it crosses bogland and heather. From both sides of the car guests will be looking at lochs, mountains and heather as they head towards what is arguably the most famous and certainly the most dramatic glen in Scotland. Glen Coe looms straight ahead! Plunging into Glen Coe, the driver will stop several times for clients to take photos, before parking up offer the guest a change to enjoy a walk if the weather is appropriate. Just a short walk from the car-park, affords a lot of elevation gain giving clients an unbelievable photographic opportunity in this jaw-dropping location. If the weather permits and the clients would like (based on fitness) a longer walk today can be arranged in the glen. Glen Coe is famous for many reasons. Home to the MacDonald Clan, who used to steal cattle from neighbouring clans before hiding them in Glen Coe's Lost Valley - a hidden Glen within the Glen, high up on the southern side of the glen. It is here that the survivors of the Glen Coe Massacre also hid, when Government troops butchered 38-clan members in their beds at night in the 1700s. Certainly, this is a must visit location and your guide will bring it to life with stories of old!

Dropping out of the glen, the clients will reach the shore line of Loch Linnhe. A sea-loch, more like a Scottish fjord. Driving the coast road south west along its rugged and beautiful shores, they will pass by Castle Stalker, a photographic gem on an island a few hundred yards from the mainland. A short distance on, the clients will arrive at the private 300-acre island of Eriska, accessed via small road bridge. Here, clients will check-in to their luxury hotel and spa where they will be staying for the next two nights. This Relais & Châteaux property boasts excellent dining, a superb location on the west coast, great spa and much more.

14th July 2020
This morning after an enjoyable early breakfast at The Isle of Eriska, the clients driver guide will be taking them to the nearby historical town of Fort William - one of the most important towns of the West Coast of Scotland. Looming behind the town stand Britain's highest mountain Ben Nevis at 4,406ft, it it's a clear day the clients may even pick out some patches of snow on the summer as areas of Ben Nevis are snow covered all year round. The purpose of heading to Fort William, will be to catch the world famous Jacobite Steam Train (also known as The Hogwarts Express to some!). This beautiful old steam train departs Fort William railway station at 10:15am and will take the clients on a two hour one-way journey along what is often voted to be 'the world's most scenic railway journey'. The routing takes them through mountains passes, tunnels and across several bridges and viaducts. The most famous viaduct arguably in the world is a highlight, crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct which has been made legendary for featuring in the Harry Potter films. Eventually the train puffs it's way down to the coast where the clients will pass by white sandy beaches looking out to the far off Hebridean islands.

Arriving into the charming harbour town of Mallaig for midday, the clients will be met at the railway platform. Now they will be boarding their very own private marine safari. A full day awaits with a luxury seafood lunch to start (which will commence as they pull out of Mallaig harbour! Think fresh laugustines, lobster, Scottish smoked salmon - all local fresh from the waters nearby). This afternoon the clients have the opportunity to experience Scotland in a way few ever do. Today gives clients a whole new perspective of Scotland's majestic West Coast, getting them out onto the water with a local expert who is a fountain of local knowledge and history. Your marine guide will beguile you with stories of old as well as giving you the chance to fish, haul up lobster pots full of crabs and lobsters and much more!

This afternoon, the main aim for the clients will be take them on an incredible tour of the local waters with an expert local fisherman / turned guide. The marine guide has been fishing these water for over 35-years before now exclusively offering tours for VIPs from around the world. Steaming out of Mallaig on the comfortable 45ft motor yacht with spacious indoor galley/saloon area, as well as large deck area outside to the rear, the yacht will be heading to the Isle of Rum, the largest of the 'Small Isles'. In fact, Rum is the 15th largest island in Scotland, yet only inhabited by 18-people. Here herds of wild Red deer roam free in the mountains, along with seal colonies and puffins on the shore. The skies are home to Sea eagles that hunt from the rugged mountain heights - these mountains define this incredible island. Amazingly, the island is also home to a semi-wild herd of Native Highland Ponies whom the clients will very likely meet as they are quite friendly. On the island clients have the opportunity to enjoy a visit to Kinloch Castle, one of the most interesting castles on the West Coast, built by a wealthy Victorian era merchant, the castle has some incredible statistics but is sadly falling into a ruinous state and will likely not be saved due to its remote location. Enjoying a dram of single malt Scotch whisky on the sailing back to the mainland, clients will toast an incredible day before arriving back into the harbour at Mallaig around 6pm. Here the driver guide will be waiting to take the clients back to the Isle of Eriska for their final night on the West Coast. Along the way back the clients will be able to stop and take photos should they wish and their guide will elaborate more on various aspects of the passing sites and scenery.

15th July 2020
Today the clients wake up on the West Coast of Scotland in the magical environment of a privately owned island - if the sun is shining it will be hard to leave this dreamy environment with croquet lawns and established formal gardens! However, after a fantastic Scottish cooked breakfast, the guest will be departing with the driver guide on a cross-country road trip to the Cairngorm National Park.

Today the clients pass by breathtaking Highland landscapes, once favoured by the famous Victorian painter Sir Edwin Landseer. Look out for the beautiful Loch Laggan and Ardverikie Castle on the far shores where Landseer spent many months painting some of his masterworks, before heading up to their very own private slice of Highland heaven (also a favourite of Sir Edwin Landseer). On arrival at the gates of the estate, a long 16km track driveway leads to the lodge. Guests will be met by a traditional horse-drawn carriage pulled by native Highland Ponies. Clients will here embark on a magical and memorable carriage drive in the traditional Victorian way. A totally unique experience as far as we know, and on offer nowhere else in Europe, this exclusive Sandgrouse Travel & Expeditions 'Grand Victorian Entrance' to your Highland Lodge will be a real highlight of the week! Luggage will go ahead with the driver. On arrival at the lodge, the clients will pull into the courtyard where the dedicated hosts will warmly welcome them to their secluded home for the next two nights.

Ballindaloch Lodge was built by the Grants of Ballindaloch in the early 1800‘s. By 1865 it had became part of the Victorian playground, operating as an exclusive hunting lodge. Today it remains so, perfect for VVIPs wishing to enjoy traditional deer-stalking in complete privacy or for those wishing to experience the romance of wild Scotland, yet retaining genuine luxury. With over 66,000 acres of Scotland’s most beautiful landscapes, from grand mountains to ancient Caledonian Pine forest and tumbling rivers, the lodge is the perfect Highland retreat for modern Royalty.

Uniquely, the interior and decor was completed by none other than Ralph Lauren who commissioned a complete redesign to London based firm Ward Denton when the lodge was renovated and refurbished in 1998. The interior is specifically made for the lodge, for example, the carpets, designed personally by Lauren, that cover the stairway through to the bedrooms. Also redesigned by Lauren is the grand master-bedroom overlooking the glen and the River Fesh. All rooms are spacious and with open views of the Highlands unfolding at the doorstep.

Entering through the old front doors of the lodge you’ll experience two simultaneous feelings. The first is pure excitement about stepping into a living part of Scottish history. Perfectly kept. Original and authentic by a laird that has updated the lodge with a mixture of respect for what is there and a good eye for the extraordinary that you’ll not find anywhere else. The second feeling is the one of letting go of whatever was on your mind and instead preparing it to take in the calm of the house and prepare for complete relaxation. Over the years the solid stonewalls have sheltered many personalities from the cold winter storms and rainy Highland days. It is said Queen Victoria lived here for some time during a fling with the painter Edward Landseer who at that time was making studies for his famous “Monarch of the Glen” painting. In modern times the lodge has seen the Crown Prince of Denmark, many Middle Eastern Royal families, actors such as likes of Dame Helen Mirren. Your ultimate highland retreat is of course serviced by a full-time chef and housekeeping staff as well as estate ranger/guide and hospitality manager.

This evening dinner will be served in the lodge prepared by the in-house chef. After dinner guests can enjoy some rifle shooting on the range with the stalker/ghillie - who will also explain more about the management of wildlife on a traditional highland estate - especially one with re-wildling at the very heart of its operation. The estate is one of the leading 're-wildling' projects in Europe, having planted hundreds of thousands of native tree species in a bid to regenerate the natural Caledonian Pine Forest that once cloaked this mountainous landscape. Alternatively, guests can chillout and enjoy their very own Highland Castle environment, tucked away from the world!

Accommodation: The private Ballindaloch Lodge and Highland Estate on an exclusive-use basis, staffed and fully-catered, inclusive of all meals and drinks. 66,000 acres of unadulterated magic await with a one-of-a-kind property.

Transfer Time: Isle of Eriska to Ballindalloch Lodge, 2-hours 44-minutes, 100 miles.

Transfer Time if using Accommodation Option 2 the previous two nights: Glencoe House to Ballindalloch Lodge, 2-hours 14-minutes, 79 miles.

16th July 2020

This morning the clients will wake up in their very own highland lodge - the dream home for many around the world. Ahead of them lies a day of wonderful activities that will sear themselves into the memory forever. After breakfast in the main dining room prepared by the in-house chef specifically to the clients preference, they will be met by the estate ghillie in the great hall by the roaring fire.

Taking short stroll down to the idyllic river which meanders its way through this most breathtaking of remote Scottish glens, the clients will he instruct on how to fly-fish. If they have never fly-fished before, the Ghillie will teach them the basis, or alternatively cast a spinner out into the river (a much more simple form of fishing). Here they will try and land  first ever Scottish salmon. Fishing in a mountain river as pristine as this, with water so pure you can drink straight from it is dream come true for many from around the world. We are delighted to be able to offer such a special experience as this to our clients. After a couple of hours fishing, guests will be invited back up to the main house for tea and coffee.

Around midday, today the clients will be met outside the main lodge by the estate stalking team clad in the estate tweeds in the authentic style of the Highlands, in-hand they will have two traditional Garron ponies (native Highland Ponies). These ponies were traditionally used to carry the stags that had been shot off the mountain, as well as basket panniers for the grouse that had been shot in the summer months. Today however these two kind-eyed and intelligent ponies will be carrying traditional “grouse panniers” loaded with a sumptuous picnic prepared to order by the private chef.

The stalkers will lead the clients through some of the most breathtaking scenery on a walk gauged perfectly for their fitness. They group will head through landscapes that are truly ancient and have a sacred feel to a secluded spot on the estate, perhaps somewhere under an granny pine over 400-years old! The perfect place for a Highland picnic exactly as Queen Victoria would have once enjoyed with her beloved Prince Albert. After the picnic luncheon, the group will make their way back to the main lodge for an afternoon tea served by the fire in the private sitting room. As an alternative should the guests prefer, a Land Rover safari with estate ranger can be arranged today together with the picnic.

Deliciously rich tartans, traditional taxidermy and antique furniture reign throughout at this royal location, just a stones throw from Her Majesty The Queen's Balmoral Castle. We wonder, is this now the UK's (if not Europe's) most incredible hotel? With 14,000 pieces of individual artwork including works by Pablo Picasso & Lucian Freud it certainly is a feast for all the sensesThe tartan and tweed throughout The Fife Arms Hotel, has been designed specifically for the hotel via careful consultation with Araminta Campbell, whom the clients will have now met in Edinburgh and started their very own design journey!

Guests will wake up in the heart of Royal Deeside at one of the most fabulous new hotels in the world. Having enjoyed a delicious breakfast their driver guide will be driving them to the nearby Highland village of Tomintoul, here the annual traditional Highland Games is taking place in the games park.

At the Games, enjoy the incredible Highland Pipes and Drums bands playing in their elaborate full Highland regalia, before enjoying the spectacle of the athletes and “heavies” or strong-men compete in traditional games such as Tossing the Caber, Hammer Throwing and Tug o’ War. Tomintoul Highland Games is one of the few remaining games that has retained a truly traditional feel - preferring to uphold tradition rather than modernisation this is a magical and quintessential Scottish experience that the guests will be lucky to enjoy.

Leaving the games field, the driver guide will take the clients to a nearby Highland estate of 71,000 acres. At Mar Lodge we have arranged for a master falconer to give a birds of prey demonstration. Our falconer has bred birds for the Saudi Royal family and is an expert in his field. A true Scotsman, he is also a gentleman and a great host with our VVIPs from around the world. Guests will be able to enjoy watching the birds being flown before flying them themselves should they wish. With everything from Hawks, to Eagles and Owls this experience will be truly memorable for the clients in such a historical and impressive Scottish setting - as if straight from a painting or a movie!

Following their unique falconry experience it will be time to head back to The Fife Arms. Here we have booked a table for a more formal dinner in The Clunie Restaurant. The Clunie Restaurant will prove a worthy and fitting culinary crescendo for their final dinner in Scotland.
