The main part of this itinerary is a full on, adventurous six day dogsledging expedition with the additional achievement of climbing to the summit of Mount Newtontoppen - the highest mountain on Spitsbergen. During the trip you will stay one night before your expedition in Longyearbyen making this in total, a six night arctic adventure.

CLIMB MOUNT NEWTONTOPPEN (at 1,713m or 5,620ft above sea level the highest mountain on Svalbard)

This trip is for those who seek arctic challenges and wish to be as close to nature as they can be. On this trip you can very well face sunshine one moment and be in a full on snow storm the next. You will travel on the frozen sea ice, over shiny glaciers and through deep powder snow. You might also come across Polar bears but more likely seals, Arctic fox or Svalbard reindeer. The trip highlight, besides mushing your own team of dogs through the pristine arctic landscape for 6 days, will be that you have the rare opportunity to summit the highest mountain of Spitsbergen – Mount Newtontoppen. This is a seriously rare privilege and something few people have the chance to complete.

We believe this is the ultimate trip - dog sledding to the archipelago's highest mountain

Sandgrouse Travel & Expeditions have planned this trip for active adventurers who are eager to set up tents, feed their dogs and enjoy life around an arctic camp.

From the mountain peak, if the weather is clear, you can see far to the north side of the archipelago and feel the brutal and beautiful arctic nature all around you. The aim today is to have lunch on top of Svalbard's highest mountain at 1713 meters above sea level.

This is a view only a very few people get to experience. Coming down from the mountain can go very fast and before the evening draws in for the close of day five, you will set up camp again at the foot of the mountain. Accommodation in expedition tents.

Dog Sledding

This is the traditional way of travelling in the Arctic that can hardly be surpassed in terms of a beautiful, intense and romantic nature experience. A few days of dog sledding, from hut to hut or camp to camp sleeping in tents, will give you a more unfiltered arctic experience.

Sandgrouse Travel & Expeditions can create and arrange several-day-long tours and journeys for the adventurous . Long dog sledding expeditions are certainly less comfortable than a cruise on board a large ship, but if you are willing to accept this you will be richly rewarded.

Dog sledding is also extremely enviromentally friendly. The industry on Svalbard creates jobs where they are desperately needed in remote places. It's now estimated that there are between 600 and 700 working dogs on the island of Spitsbergen.
