5 NIGHTS, WINTER ACTIVITIES, SWEDISH CULTURE AND HISTORY

This holiday has been carefully designed by the team at Sandgrouse Travel & Expeditions so that you can enjoy some of the finest winter adventure activities on offer as well as experience the history and the culture associated with Swedish Lapland. Staying at two of our favourite lodges in Swedish Lapland, you will enjoy activities and excursions local to the lodges whilst relaxing in the breathtaking Swedish Lapland environment. You will also enjoy a Sami Culture overnight tour, where educative activities are combined with your overnight stay as a guest of a tradtional reindeer herdsman. Throughout your holiday, each evening you will hunt the northern lights and your accommodation hosts will always keep you updated as to the chances of seeing the aurora borealis. Light pollution across Swedish Lapland is very low and therefore at each of our carefully selected overnight destinations there is always the opportunity to see the dancing colours of the northern lights if conditions are correct. Your trip will finish with a visit to a UNESCO World Heritage Site near to Lulea where you can enjoy a private guided tour around one of the best preserved examples of a traditional Swedish Lapland settlement, including its breathtaking 15th Century Church. End your holiday with an overnight stay in a sophisticated Swedish four star contemporary hotel and enjoy its wonderful new spa and dine in one of Lulea's top restaurants sampling local cuisine at its finest.

You will then be driven by private transfer to your accommodation about 30 minutes drive from the airport, heading to the remote and beautiful Brandon Lodge, set in the heart of rural Swedish Lapland. This charming and magical lodge will become your home for the next two nights.

On arrival you will have time to settle in to your new environment and check in to your private cabin. After a welcome drink and briefing from guides and staff by a roaring log fire (either in the main building or in a welcoming teepee tent), it will be time to settle down to some traditional Scandinavian cuisine over a dinner in the cosy restaurant.

Following dinner, should you wish to go on a mini-excursion, Sandgrouse Travel & Expeditions have designed this holiday with an after dinner visit to the unique and charming 'Brandon Lodge Shoreside Cabin Bar'. You will be collected by snowmobile sleigh and taken out onto the Bothnian Sea on a short journey across the frozen pack ice to the shoreside cabin bar located along the coast on the banks of the sea. This outdoor veranda cabin, lit by candle will have been prepared for your arrival and you can enjoy an after dinner drink,  whilst taking in the wilderness of your surroundings. Your day will begin with a delicious breakfast in the comfort of Brandon Lodge where you can enjoy both hot and cold food options. You will then head to Brandon's on-site dress rooms where you will be fitted out in a winter 'snow mobile suit' which should keep you warm on your dog sledding adventure. You will be fitted out in modern snow boots, base layer gloves, mittens and balaclava too.

Your dog sledding experience is only a short distance away from Brandon Lodge and you will be taken to the Husky HQ by private transfer to begin your excursion. This wonderful experience is a chance to lead your own team of huskies across trails and the wilderness of Swedish Lapland and is the most traditional way of travelling large distances in this frozen tundra country. Should you wish to ride as passenger, you can do so by taking a seat in the attached sleigh, or take turns with your group to drive the dogs (otherwise known as mushing). During your excursion, you will stop for lunch at a remote and carefully chosen location and your expert guide will make lunch-camp, where you will enjoy a traditional cooking fire and take in your surroundings whilst enjoying traditional food. After the excursion, should you wish to assist with the unharnessing of your huskies, you may do so, enhancing your experience with these wonderful animals further.

Once you have returned to Brandon Lodge and recharged in your cosy private cabin or in the comfort of the main Lodge (pastries and hot/cold drinks will be served for you), you can then recharge your batteries further by enjoying Brandon's outdoor hot tub.

This evening your dinner will begin in an alternate setting. You will be served traditional Swedish soup in a unique log cabin in the grounds of Brandon Lodge, which is themed traditionally with rustic Scandinavian style and heated by log burning stove. The cabin is available for your private use all evening for you to return to after dinner for some cold drinks and a place to relax. Simply step outside the door of this cabin and you are on the shores of the Bothnian Sea, hopefully the northern lights will make an appearance making this all the more special.

Main course for dinner is served in the main restaurant and bar area in Brandon Lodge itself.

Local Area

In Swedish Lapland you are sure to find your arctic experience. With vast contrasts between the seasons from polar nights with sparkling northern lights displays to warm summers filled with days spent swimming in fresh water lakes or under the midnight sun.

The local area around Lulea where much of this itinerary is based includes the Lulea archipelago which features as many as 1,300 islands, many with hidden sandy beaches. To the west of the Lulea region you'll find high mountains and brooks with water so clean you can drink from them.

Temperatures in this part of northern Sweden are extremely cold during the winter months, we recommend travellers pack for a true winter experience. Guests are also supplied with additional suitable winter clothing on arrival and or before their activities commence.

Dresscode

Casual, sporty winter clothing. We recommend that you dress in Three different layers, as the picture below. Except what you bring by your self you will borrow thermo pants, Thermo jacket, winter boots, hats & gloves for the activities. But good to have a warm jacket with you for the walks when we don’t do the activities.

Following should definitely be a part of luggage:

•    Warm sweater/fleece

•    Warm ski underwear

•    Warm socks

•    Winter shoes

•    Swimwear (for sauna)
