This incredible part of the world may be spelt Lappland, but is often Anglicised as Lapland (Swedish: Lappland, Latin: Lapponia) and is a province located in northern Sweden.
The region borders Norwary, Finland, Norrbotten, Vasterbotten, Angermanland and Jamtland. The region is vast and constitutes approximately a quarter of Sweden's total surface area.
The region used to extend futher east, but in 1809, Russian Empire conquests annexed the eastern part of the Swedish realm. It was at this time that the Grand Duchy of Finland split the region into Swedish Lapland and Finnish Lapland.
The region is known for being named a UNESCO World Heritage Site called the Laponian area and it contains some of the oldest and most breathtaking National Parks in Northern Europe, e.g. Sarak National Park which was established in 1909.
