FANTASTIC SNOWMEN AND WHERE TO FIND THEM

Where to build the best snowman

How many wintry experiences have you and the family managed to savour this year?

Has the winter all but gone with the family bonding time of snowball fights, snowman building and epic sledging wipe-outs failing to materialise? Hmmm, we thought so. Fear not, Sandgrouse Travel & Expeditions can help you out.

Here in Scotland and even across much of Europe, people have struggled to find the winter conditions of old. There is still a place however where the winter of our nostalgia lives-on strongly. Better still, this is a destination suitable for everyone from families with young children, to couples seeking a romantic hide-out and even the seasoned adventure junkies.

Swedish Lapland in the far north of Sweden and is one of the few ‘local’ destinations that truly offers the magic of a winter wonderland. We use the word ‘magic’ because Swedish Lapland truly is. In fact it is a destination so far removed from our ‘ordinary lives’ that a trip here cannot fail but to do exactly what a holiday should – create lasting memories and hit your inner reset button. This is a destination that offers a lot more than just great wintry conditions.

Previous bucket-list travel destinations can now easily become a reality

We feel that our trips to Swedish Lapland are so immersive and so powerful that they get into the very soul of a person. Visitors to Swedish Lapland on a Sandgrouse Travel trip should be prepared to have their idea of winter completely altered. Swedish Lapland will exceed your expectations, leaving you totally spellbound, hungry to learn more about a fascinating and rich local culture and with a heightened appreciation for colder climates and new winter living skills.

There is no doubt the world’s regional climates are changing and as average temperatures rise we probably need to look to alternative destinations for our wintry fix. In doing so many of our previous bucket-list travel destinations can become a reality.

Next winter, why not swap the crowded European ski slopes for a snowshoes step into the unknown?

Lapland offers experiences that you simply cannot find elsewhere. In part this is due to the local culture, the people in this part of the world have a unique way of living and a very identifiable culture. The Saami people are the traditional reindeer herders who have inhabited this far northern corner of the world for thousands of years and they have left a strong mark on the region and the way of life that endures. Let us open up to you a new wintry world of adrenaline fuelled dog-sledding, cross-country skiing through silent pine forests, thrilling reindeer herding with local Saami people and even quiet contemplation by a crackling birch-wood fire in the snow with a hot lingonberry tea.

How about the rush of a snowmobile ride across frozen pack-ice to an ice fishing ground? Catch your own Arctic char (one of the most delicious fish in the world – a sort of cross between salmon and trout packed with many health benefits!). What trip to Sweden would be complete without a traditional log-fired saunas and for the brave a dip in the frozen waters of a Swedish lake?! The Swedes swear by this invigorating cultural custom and many of our clients love to give it a go!

We know the best Northern Lights ‘hot-spots’

One of the most incredible experiences of course is to see the Northern Lights. This is a natural phenomenon that is almost ethereal. For many people seeing these dazzling displays of natural light, dancing across the night sky is one of the most amazing experiences of their lives. The experience is as you might imagine, quite other-worldly and no two displays are the same. We know the best Northern Lights ‘hot-spots’ across the Nordic countries and select the most suitable to feature in our bespoke itineraries.

Sandgrouse Travel & Expeditions specialise in creating carefully crafted holidays and adventures throughout the Nordic countries, from Iceland and Arctic Svalbard, to Norway, Sweden and Finland. We work with all budgets and requirements and believe in wowing our clients through exceptional service and our great itineraries.
