Serian's Nkorombo

THE PERFECT BLEND OF WILDERNESS AND LUXURY IN THE MAASAI MARA RESERVE, this small tented camp is one of the most authentic camps in the area, ticking all the boxes for the safari traditionalist!

Nkorombo is Serian's tented mobile camp, situated in a private riverside campsite, with views over the rushing Mara River. It has a snug set up, nestled amongst wild olive trees and Orange Croton bushes, offering shade from the beating sun.

The camp consists of five traditional 'Selous Style' Meru tents, decked out with leather, weathered wood and gauzy swathes of cotton to replicate the authentic safari styles of the past. Each tent has its own en-suite bathroom with a flush toilet and bucket shower, combining authenticity with modern day luxury. In keeping with tradition and its classic theme, the camp is hosted by local Maasai, so most mornings you should expect to wake up to the sounds of tea being delivered to your verandah and water to your shower.

Nkorombo is the perfect location for spectacular game viewing, guests can look out over the Mara River where hippos and crocodiles can be seen bathing, or take a small walk round the river bend to where there is a wildebeest and zebra crossing point. The area is famous for these migration river crossings which are at their peak in July/October. Next to the camp there is also a lively salt lick: black rhino, lion and leopards are regularly seen here. There is an abundance of predators and prey in this area, and the gentle rolling grasslands surrounding the camp ensure that animals are never out of sight.

Camp Overview

The camp benefits from 5 spacious 'Selous Style' tents. Dining is hosted in the camp's stylish mess tent or can also be enjoyed on the riverbank. There is a 24 hour generator providing electricity to the camp.

Located in the amazing heartland of the Mara Confluence area, this Serian camp offers its guests a really special experience by being one of the most traditional camps in the area being hosted by the local Maasai. The Serian experience here provides expert guiding with all groups of guests benefitting from their own private vehicle. The area is renowned for strong wildlife all year round and is famous because of the migration river crossings in July/October.

Tent Details

The classic style camp uses traditional style tents which are fully canvas and located in exclusive positions along the Mara River. Each tent has an ensuite bathroom and flush toilet. Like all Serian camps, this camp follows trend by being environmentally sensitive with almost zero footprint. There being only 5 tents gives its guests an awareness of the camp's exclusivity, being at one with its conservation awareness, positioned in harmony with its natural surroundings.

Activities

All groups of guests have exclusive/private use of 4x4 safari vehicles with a dedicated guide and wildlife spotter. Game drives are plentiful and benefit from the prime area of the Maasai Mara, with its beautiful scenery and an abundance of wildlife due to the River Mara. There is also access to the major migration river crossing points which are famous for the main wildebeest and zebra migrations in July/October.

Ice-cold sundowners are on offer for all guests round the campfire and for those keen on photography, the opportunities at this camp are endless and amazing.

Tented Mess

The camp's core is the tented mess, which is positioned sensitively in light woodland on the river banks. There are separate lounge and dining areas and additional sofas are positioned on the veranda.

Bathrooms have flush toilet with hot water bucket showers.

Useful Overview

Nkorombo mobile camp is open all year round. It is located on a private campsite in the Maasai Mara National Reserve, giving it an intimate feel despite the location being a popular safari destination. At this location on the Mara River, the flow of the river is fairly fast and audible.

Each group staying at Nkorombo has exclusive use of their own open-top safari vehicle, accompanied by a dedicated guide and spotter. This freedom allows guest to have an unforgettable safari experience, tailor-made to their own individual needs.

Sandgrouse Travel & Expeditions would suggest that this camp can be combined well with other camps from Serian's stable. Access to the camp is by light aircraft. Along with 4x4 safari, guests can also enjoy a balloon safari. There is no minimum age restriction for children accompanying their parents at this camp. Children would be expected to be supervised and respect the tranquility of the camp's location at all times.

When to Visit

The camp is open all year round!

July/October is the most traditional time to visit the Maasai Mara, with visitor numbers in the area at their peak. This is due to the high numbers of wildlife in particular the main wildebeest migration because of the height of the dry season.

November/June is the green season with more rain but can be a pleasant time of the year to visit with nothing more than residual showers. March/May is the main rainy season and despite the rains wildlife remains prolific in the lush grasses. Visitor numbers again rise during the holiday seasons of December and January although these are still great months to come and enjoy the area.

Ownership

Nkorombo Serian is owned and operated by Alex Walker. Alex is regarded as one of the best guides in Africa and is a welcoming host and someone who you would be proud to have as a friend. You are however, unlikely to meet Alex personally, due to his time table and requirement to host his other camps across the border in the Serengeti. His ethos and personality however remain at the camp and are translated through the competence of his staff and the authenticity of the safari and the environmentally sensitve approach towards viewing wildlife.

The Serian Mara North is Alex's main base and is positioned in a private conservancy to the north, to which this camp acts as a sister to. The two camps combine brilliantly and offer a complementary range of activities - Sandgrouse Travel & Expeditions endorse the option of staying at both of them as this adds up to a very rounded Mara experience.

Located in the Maasai Mara National Reserve, the local airstrip is: Musiara (light aircaft)

Upon booking, Sandgrouse Travel and Expeditions will provide you with the all the necessary information and details as required.
