Leobo Private Reserve is a completely private 23,000 acre estate based in the beautiful Waterberg mountains, 3 hours drive north of Johannesburg and home to the award winning ‘Observatory Bush Villa’ – probably the most stunning safari house in Africa not only from an architectural and style perspective but also as a fantastic home for families and small groups.

Leobo does not offer timetabled game drives, rigid programs or meals at set times. Of course you can go on game drives whenever you like, day or night – whenever suits you.

Leobo Reserve is for people who want a bit more out of life than a bunch of Kodak shots of the Big Five. You can do anything if you like. Just ask.

Health and medical services

Leobo is situated in a malaria-free area. All staff members are trained in First Aid for minor incidents. It is advisable that guests ensure that they have adequate travel insurance.

Dress

Cool, breathable clothes are advisable for the summer months. During the winter months (May to September), warm clothes are essential.

What To Pack

Comfortable walking shoes, sun hats, sunglasses, sunscreen/block

In summer: lightweight clothing, bathing suits, warmer clothing for game drives
In winter: light clothing for day time, bathing suit for the warmer spells, very warm insulated jackets for game drives

The Waterberg Observatory is situated within Leobo and is an integral part of the main house.

The Observatory’s fully automated copper coloured dome houses two different types of telescope – a 20 inch corrected Dahl Kirkham for looking at stars, Planets and Nebulae and an 8 inch Hydrogen Alpha scope for looking directly at the sun.

The setup is capable of producing world class images and is complete with all the equipment necessary to do various levels of just plain optical viewing as well as more complex astrophotography.

Due to the reserves remote location, there is virtually no light pollution and it is possible to see objects down to Magnitude 7.4 (the limit of the human eye is normally Magnitude 6) meaning that the skies are some of the best in the world for Astronomy.

Guests staying at the house are able to see a tour of the night skies and it is also possible to book a local Astronomer who can give a more detailed Starlit Safari.

Private Transfers to and from Johannesburg International Airport can be arranged within your travel itinerary should you prefer a road transfer out to the Waterberg Mountains.
